Brighton was incorporated as a village on February 23, 1859. The village proper is a small bedroom community located in Macoupin County. The Brighton area is also composed of rural and semi-rural settings from the area surrounding the village on all four sides.
There are two community parks in Brighton. Betsey Ann, with three lighted baseball diamonds, covered picnic areas, and tennis courts is the hosting area for two annual community wide picnics. The forty-acre Schneider Park has two additional lighted baseball diamonds, lighted walking path, large covered pavilion, soccer fields and new BMX race track sponsored by the American Bicycle Association.
Southwestern Community Unit School District 9, has two public schools located within Brighton: one K - 1 and one K - 6. Middle school and senior high school are located in adjacent buildings in Piasa, a small town to the north of Brighton. The District also maintains an Alternative School south of town.
