Jersey County is the home of picturesque Grafton, located at the point where the Illinois River and the Mississippi River converge. It is also a gateway to Pere Marquette State Park.
Grafton is another river town where not much has changed since the days of the paddlewheel steamboats. With a population of approximately 600, it nonetheless boasts its own police and fire protection.
Grafton has become a favored tourist stop with its antique stores, quaint gift shops, galleries, cozy restaurants, and comfortable bed and breakfasts lining the Great River Road, Grafton’s main street.
Two splendid new subdivisions, Grafton Hills and the Palisades, are in development atop the high bluffs that overlook the village. Both feature prestigious single-family homes on large prairie lots and amid surrounded woodland hills. Additionally, a new marina and condominium complex are planned for this river community.
Grafton students attend the schools of Jersey Community Unit School District 100, with a new grade school under construction in the community. The hospitals of Alton and Jerseyville meet residents’ medical needs. |
